Racecourse Cemetery Boatharbour Ulladulla 1856 – 1900

Ulladulla’s Old Cemetery, also known as Racecourse Cemetery, which was active for burials from 1856 to 1900, with various cemetery names recorded throughout its history. Despite its current abandoned state and only four surviving headstones, it is believed that around 100 burials occurred at the site over the years.

The cemetery is a heritage item listed by Shoalhaven Council, with a significant historical context including the diversion of the Princes Highway over the site in 1933 and the eventual closure of burials in 1895.

This new local history publication discusses the challenges faced in preserving the cemetery, including the destruction caused by a bushfire in 1904 and the ongoing encroachment of development, which has led to the loss of headstones and grave markers over time.

Racecourse Cemetery Boatharbour Ulladulla 1856 – 1900 by historian Cathy Dunn will be available for purchasing online or from the Ulladulla.Info office in early July 2025.
