Local fishers invited to shape the future of Burrill Lake Sat 12 Sep

OzFish, Australia’s only fish habitat restoration charity, is calling on South Coast locals to get their hands dirty for a good cause this September, with a community planting day set to help bring important fish habitat back to Burrill Lake.

Local fishers, families and community members are invited to join OzFish at Burrill Lake on Saturday 12 September, from 9.30 am to 2.30 pm, to plant saltmarsh and help restore important habitat for local fish and aquatic species.

Saltmarsh plays an important role in keeping coastal fisheries healthy by providing food and shelter for fish and other aquatic species and helping create healthier, more resilient estuaries.

The planting day forms part of a larger OzFish project restoring saltmarsh at four sites across the NSW South Coast, funded by the Australian Government’s Local Environmental Projects Program and supported by BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing.

OzFish Senior Project Officer, Harry Davey, said the planting day was an opportunity for locals to play a hands-on role in improving the health of Burrill Lake.

“Saltmarsh is incredibly valuable fish habitat, but across the South Coast we have lost or degraded a lot of these areas over time,” Mr Davey said.

“The great thing about days like this is that the community can actually get involved in putting that habitat back. You can turn up in the morning, get some plants in the ground and know you have directly contributed to making this waterway healthier for fish into the future.

“We know fish need more than just water to thrive. They need healthy habitat around our lakes, rivers and estuaries, and restoring places like this is an important part of looking after the fisheries we all enjoy.”

The latest planting at Burrill Lake builds on restoration work already completed during the first phase of the project. OzFish is inviting fishers, families and anyone keen to lend a hand to come along and make a difference.

Once the planting is done, volunteers will be treated to a BBQ lunch, and afterwards there may even be an opportunity to wet a line.
